Welcome back to CarDriver. The current health crisis resulted in a change to our usual publishing schedule, with the previous issue staying on newsstands for two months, but I’m happy to report that our normal monthly service has now been resumed – even if things remain far from normal in the wider world. Anyway, we’re not here to dwell on all that, rather to offer some automotive escapism in the form of our usual mix of classic, modern classic and contemporary BMWs.

Now, father and son team Kiron and Tahmid Haque have become regulars in the pages of BMW Car, we have found ourselves working our way through their everevolving collection of the most iconic BMWs simply because they’re all some of the best examples in the country. This month’s cover star is another Haque classic, and by their own admission a firm favourite in the household. The 850CSi has been a highly regarded BMW since its inception but in recent times its popularity has grown further, good examples are highly sought after amongst ardent BMW collectors like the Haques – and with good reason. We learn more about this pair of BMW enthusiasts – who have only been in the game for two short years – and their fabulous 850CSi E31.

Sticking with classic theme we also take a deep dive into designer Pietro Frua. Frua’s jaw-dropping BMW creations – such as the beautiful 2800GTS – helped shape the future of the brand. And, the story behind Australian Dean How of Peninsula BM, the largest BMW dismantler in Oz, and his 635CSi racer is sure to interest those with a soft spot for E24s, which is everyone, right?

We also take the somewhat unusual, but not unheard of, step of pitching a popular BMW against a competitor from a rival brand in this issue. The E36 318iS is a certified BMW Car favourite, we put it up against the Audi Coupé from the same era to see how it stacks up. Through the usual channels I’d be interested to know how you feel about seeing comparative features like this, involving “non-BMWs”, more often? Love it? Hate it? Let us know. Enjoy the issue.
